A neighbor stopped by to borrow something and as I hobbled to get it for her, I explained, "I'm sorry. I'm sore from running in a half-marathon yesterday." <div>

"Oh, did you not train?"</div>

And my head hung in shame. "Yes, I trained. Just not enough. And I'm not very good at running."</div>

For most of that first week, I was very ashamed--of how sore I was, of how bad I felt when it was over. I thought I would feel a huge sense of accomplishment, but mostly I felt how sore my muscles were and remembered how hard those last three miles were.</div>

Tonight I went for my first post-race run. I didn't know if I would keep running after this, but I feel like it would be a waste of a lot of time and energy (and money for cute shoes) to give it up now. I was driving down into the Rose Bowl for the first time since the race. Where I usually park just happened to be where the hardest part of the race for me began (the last two miles). I didn't know how it would go after a two week sabbatical. But it was amazing. I only ran two miles, but <i>I ran two miles</i>. No stops, no walking. My leg didn't hurt. I could breath. That is huge.</div>

I decided to join my friends in this race to raise money to free modern day slaves. Somewhere along the way, I think I became a runner. </div>

<li>About a mile in it just kind of hit me, <i>I'm doing this</i>. It was overwhelming and intense.</li>
<li>About mile 10, when I knew there were 3 more miles. My feet hurt intensely and my stomach was spasming/cramping.</li>
<li>At mile 13, with a tenth of a mile to go. A friend told me that I should sing the Chariots of Fire song loudly as I crossed the finish line. I started humming/singing it and almost starting sobbing (it's a very emotional song). Since I didn't want to cross the finish line as a hysterical mess, I quickly focused on something else.</li>
</ol>

I went into this race with several goals:</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Finish it (if possible in under 3 hours)</li>
<li>Have as much fun as possible</li>
<li>Not pee, poop, or puke in inappropriate places</li>
</ol>
<div>
I mostly accomplished these. I'm trying not to be too disappointed about being over 3 hours (it was just 5 minutes and 48 seconds, but I know I could have done better). There were pacers for various speeds, one of which was a man holding a 3:00 sign. He led a group in walking and jogging at a pace that would have them finish at exactly 3 hours. I was with them until about mile 1, when I passed them and stayed well ahead of them until mile 12, when they passed me. By that point, my stomach was cramping so badly that keeping up with them was out of the question (I tried briefly).</div>

Somehow I was born with a stomach that does not like mornings. If I get up earlier than my routine, my stomach seems to know and will not allow food in before it's normal breakfast time. When I woke up this morning at 5:11am I knew that I needed to eat something fairly substancial, but trying to eat made me feel like I was going to puke. I finally managed half a banana and most of my hot tea, not really the breakfast of champions. I was able to eat another banana as we walked to the starting line, but I wish I could have managed more. I think this is what made the last third of the race miserable for me.</div>

I think the combination of anxiety and not eating properly was really hard on my stomach. It didn't stop spasming/cramping until 5 or 6 hours after the race. Hopefully it will be normal again tomorrow.</div>

I did have quite a bit of fun, more so in the first 10 miles. Everyone running had a story. I got a chance to hear some of them: a group of 130 teens from New York flew in to run to raise money for <a href="http://www.hasc.net/">HASC</a>-- a program for special needs children; a woman who had heart surgery a couple years before; a woman running in memory of a friend's daughter. I was inspired by their stories.</div>

I expecting to have pain in my fat leg. I did, but only until mile 2 or 3 and not unbearably. There was a big hill right before the second mile marker. Hills hurt my leg like crazy. I started up it chanting, "this will hurt, but I can do it." I'm not sure what the people around me thought, but it helped. </div>

I wasn't running with anyone since all my friends are faster than me. I needed company, so I used social media and texting. That worked fairly well except typing and running is hard.</div>

I don't think I ever want to do that again. I'm not sure if I'm glad I did it this time. Natural childbirth was easier and hurt less and I got a baby at the end. </div>

I took Charlotte to the library today. As we were walking home, she got distracted by some rocks. About 10 minutes into her play, I got bored and checked my email. I had several donation notifications. If I've done my math right, the goal has been reached. (The on-line site will not let me enter the donations that people have given me as checks, so it doesn't quite match up.) </div>

I am overwhelmed with how many people have joined me in this goal. I have been encouraged daily by people telling me they are cheering for me, by people donating to the cause, by motivational pictures that my mom texted me. This morning I woke to Eleanor and Charlotte practicing their cheers, "Run, Mommy Run!" and "Run faster!". The race course goes within a couple blocks of our house, so I'm hoping they will come cheer for me there and then meet me at the finish line, because I'm pretty sure I'll make it there.</div>

I expected to lose weight (I didn't). I expected to be super fit by now (I'm not). I didn't expect to become so emotionally involved in the physical act of running. <br />

Years ago, when I first started hearing about modern day slavery, I accepted it with sorrow, but an attitude of helplessness. 27 million people are enslaved worldwide. What could I do? I did what I could, which mostly involved changing some of my buying habits (more fair trade or used items). When my friends gave me the opportunity to fund raise with them, I thought <i>Finally, something tangible to do</i>.<br />

Now through all the wonderful, supportive friends, family and strangers, we've raised enough to redeem the lives of several young girls--to give them a chance at something more than being property To give them freedom and a life. <br />

I was hoping that it wasn't just a fluke.<br />

Tonight I set out to go around the Rose Bowl. It was cold, ever so cold (by SoCal standards, so like 60). As I was running, I was thinking about how far I've come. I'm still running the same circle, but now I'm actually running and almost enjoying it. Almost. It's still really hard. <br />
<br />
Once when Matt and I were waiting for the Indonesian embassy to give us visas, we went on a tour of friends. While visiting one friend in Dallas, we went to the dog park with her. This beautiful white dog walked over and stood in front of me. I made polite conversation with the owner about its breed and such. Then it peed on me. I have held a grudge against this dog since. Tonight a dog very similar to that beautiful white dog ran into me. I was able to mostly dodge it, but I was not pleased. I think this particular breed has it out for me.<br />
<br />
Tonight's run was my fastest yet, my pace down to 11:20 min/mile average. I kept having to slow myself down. I like going fast, but don't yet have the stamina to maintain that speed. I finished the three miles in 34 minutes (and 5 seconds). I'm proud of that. Four months ago I couldn't run a quarter of a mile without feeling like I would collapse. Now I'm really running and even passing people on occasion! <br />
<br />
Last night I had my worst race anxiety dream yet. In the dream I had showed up at the starting line only to realize I was in jeans and a t-shirt (and underclothes completely unsuitable for running). I didn't have my number bib thing. I didn't have my shoes or the little thing that goes on my shoe to time the run. The guy who was telling the people when to go held all the people back to wait for me to get my things ready, but I couldn't figure out where my running clothes were or how to get them. <br />
<br />
I woke up from this dream to find email notifications of more donations. This almost alleviated the anxiety from the dream. I am amazed and overwhelmed by all the kind words and support that my friends, family, and even strangers have shown. For the few of you who read this, thank you. It means a lot to me to know that I have such wonderful people backing me.<br />

It kind of blows my mind that I get sick, hopeless and extremely discouraged and then the next time I go out to run it suddenly works. <br />

I'm still nervous about running for 13.1 miles. The pain in my leg stopped tonight and last night after about a mile and a half and didn't start again until I stopped. <br />

The only other thing that I'm worried about is raising the other $1,045.80 to meet my goal [insert expectant, pleading smile here].<br />

I looked at it and saw that a friend (another non-runner) has been inspired to partake in the fine art of torture that is running. She said that she had run 17 minutes today. My thought process went something like this: <i>I don't think I've ever run 17 minutes straight. I wonder if I can. I think I can. I'll do that.</i><br />

Then this funny thing happened. I started running around the Rose Bowl and <i>just never stopped</i> (I did stop half a mile in to stretch out my leg, but no walking). I was working on pacing tonight and it was amazing how easy it was to run the full 3 miles. Not too long ago, I was looking at the data from my app and realized that I'm running way faster than I can maintain (7-9min/mile) which leads to needing to walk. So, with my phone in hand, I watched my pace as I ran tonight. I averaged a 13 minute mile, which I realize is very slow. I wasn't even winded most of the time and my leg didn't cramp (the two things that usually inspire a walking break). It's amazing how much pacing makes a difference. <br />
<br />
I'm not sure how much the cocktail of homeopathic remedies and drugs that I've been ingesting affected this evening's run. I woke up this morning with much less snot and a much less sore throat. I think I'm going to survive. I may even make it all 13.1 miles.<br />

I don't get sick often and am not pleased with the timing of this illness. Why didn't I agree to a movie watching marathon? Or a candy eating marathon? I would be great at those.<br />

I was just doing a little searching looking for how many calories running a half marathon would burn (just to get an idea of the energy expenditure). I came across this anxiety producing gem "The death rate while jogging is about seven times higher than the death rate while sedentary." Of course that's from the <a href="http://www.livestrong.com/article/374953-how-many-calories-do-you-burn-running-a-half-marathon/#ixzz2K017RsPF">LiveStrong</a> website, so who knows if it's true. <br />
<br />
In effort to name and deal with the stress, I'm going to list the things that I'm worried about as of now, I'm sure google searches will produce more anxiety as the race day approaches. In no particular order, I am scared of:<br />

<li>rabid dogs on the course</li>
<li>being picked up by the pace car</li>
<li>not meeting the fundraising goal</li>
<li>that my sinuses will still be filled with snot </li>
<li>not eating/drinking the right things while running</li>
<li>not liking the music that's playing on the course</li>
<li>falling on my face</li>
<li>passing out</li>
<li>rabid cats on the course</li>
<li>having to make small talk while running</li>
<li>finishing last</li>
<li>not finishing</li>
<li>not knowing how to eat/drink/consume the gel</li>
<li>rabid squirrels on the course</li>
<li>not being able to find my family/ride home after it's over and having to walk the 2 miles home</li>
<li>not having cool enough clothes/hair (it's the Rock n Roll Half-Marathon)</li>
<li>that I haven't trained enough (I know this to be the case)</li>
<li>and thanks to the LiveStrong site, death</li>

Last week Charlotte (the three year old) got pink eye. Her pediatrician would not simply call in drops, so I had to take her to germland (much like Disneyland, but with fewer rides). Two days after the visit, Charlotte's eyes were all better, but she started running a fever...and the snot, oh the snot. Charlotte, ever the generous child, has shared her affliction with Matt and me. So, thank you Dr. Iwantyourmoney, for this gift you have given our family.<br />

I decided to attempt a run this morning despite the snot. Every once in a while when I am headed out for a run I ask Eleanor (the seven year old) if she wants to go. She always says no, until today. We took off, her on her scooter, me on foot. I stuck a piece of flannel in my running belt thing to use as a handkerchief. <br />

This run was actually quite enjoyable. Eleanor was delightful. She did get thirsty, so we stopped at a Starbucks and bought a bottle of water (I should have planned better where we would go by parks with water fountains). It was a short (about 2.5 miles) run and somewhat slow, but what I needed for today.<br />

I'm more than a little stressed about this race being only two weeks away. I've started having the anxiety dreams--where I show up in the wrong shoes, where I'm trying to get to the starting line but can't find it, where I'm running the wrong way, where I fall down and break my arm but finish the race anyway like that gymnast. You know, the usual dreams one has when facing a race they are completely unprepared for. I've never run a race before of any sort. Is there racing etiquette I should know? The form said that there are stations for water and gatoraide set up along the course and one station with "gel." I only hope this is hair gel. I could list my long litany of complaints, but that would take a long time and I just don't feel like it. I was planning on doing short runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week. But Monday was a holiday and we were having too much family fun. I went on Tuesday. The rest of the week too much was going on for running. So, yesterday after only one short run this week, I ran 7.3 miles (ran/walked). Now I am very tired. <br />

My app told me that I was going 34mph at one point on the run. Either it messed up or I've gotten a lot better at this running business. <br />

This race is in three weeks. I have so many mixed feelings right now. Three weeks and I will be done! But in order to be done, I have to run/walk 13.1 miles. Today was my longest run and will be until the race. I don't enjoy the running part. I do enjoy the feeling of accomplishment.<br />

When I saw the physical therapist last week, she told me that I should start "tapering down" since I was just a month away from the race. I don't think she knows me well. If I "taper down" much, I'll be going backwards. She also told me to walk for 5-10 minutes to warm up before stretching. I tried that tonight and had NO leg pain. Amazing. That was the first time in 8 years that I have exercised without pain in my right leg.<div>

Unrelated, I really enjoy all the dogs on the walking track around the Rose Bowl. I like the English bulldogs that sound like they are struggling more than I am. I like the little dogs that look like any minute they are going to wind their leashes around their walker's legs. My favorite are the dogs in strollers. I count it a good run when I see one (and there usually is at least one). These little dogs look so entitled and bored. One day I passed a man pushing a stroller. As I went past him, I saw in addition to the stroller he had a baby strapped to his chest. I thought, "Oh, maybe it's twins," and as I looked back to see the baby in the stoller, I was surprised to see the other "baby" was a dog. Tonight there was a woman pushing a rolly-walker thing with a dog wrapped in a blanket balanced in the middle. What is with all these lazy dogs? If I can run this with two legs (one of them not so great), surely these dogs could run with four legs. Maybe I'll make an inspirational video for dogs, push them past the boundaries of their strollers.</div>

It was hot today, almost 80 degrees. In addition to it being rather warm, there was something in the air that was irritating my nose. Breathing through my nose was painful/sneeze inducing, which meant I kept breathing through my mouth. So my list of complaints for today's run:</div>

Matt had found a physical therapist who is certified in lymphedema treatment. Lymphedema is similar in a lot of ways to my constant swelling, so she was about to offer some insight. Of course that insight was not what I wanted to hear: "Your leg will always be like this. Exercise and compression stockings can help, but not heal."</div>

The good news is she is able to fit me for a prescription compression stocking (after I call my friendly, fast-talking doctor and get her to sign off on the referral). It will be ugly, but having one that is the right size/strength is very helpful.</div>

I loved them. I was good at math. We would gather pledges for how many math problems we would do, then work the problems. I'm sure I never gathered very much money, but I always finished the whole workbook. The money went to <a href="http://www.stjude.org/stjude/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=f87d4c2a71fca210VgnVCM1000001e0215acRCRD">St. Jude Children's Research Hospital</a>. As I a kid, I knew that the money was going to help sick kids. <br />

Last week my friend's <a href="http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/scox">five week old son</a> was admitted to St. Jude's with cancer. This is when I remembered the Math-A-Thons. According to tradition (and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Jude">Wikipedia</a>) Saint Jude is "The Saint for the Hopeless and the Despaired." When St. Jude Children's Research Hospital opened in 1962, most childhood cancers were terminal. Now, thanks to 50 years of painstaking researching, my friend's son has a chance. 20ish years ago when I was working those math problems, I had no idea that I would be funding research that would some day help someone dear to me.<br />

The amazing thing about giving money to help others is you never know how that will affect you. I'm working to raise money for Oasis India right now. Oasis India is a anti-trafficking organization that works with local officials to find and end human trafficking. Less than two years ago, <a href="http://www.oasisglobal.org/announcements/bangalore-begging-racket-busted">Oasis was involved in a raid that rescued 300 kids</a>. These children, over a third of them under the age of three, were being forced to beg for money and beaten if they didn't bring back enough. The babies were often drugged and used as a begging prop. These children are 'the hopeless and the despaired.' There are 27 million people worldwide being bought and sold like property. I saw this quote and liked it. Gary Haugen is the president and CEO of <a href="http://www.ijm.org/">International Justice Mission</a>, "a human rights agency that brings rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression" (quote from their website). I am learning more and more why people use so many marathon analogies. I have never been so aware of how every aspect of my life affects my physical endurance until now. What I eat, drink, how much I sleep, what I wear...all of this plays a role in how well I run. Seeking justice is much harder than running, requiring more training and mindfulness. I like that I've been able to kind of combine the two.<br />

I finished my longest run yet today: 5.4 miles. Matt and the girls dropped me off by the <a href="http://www.gamblehouse.org/">Gamble House</a> (as seen in Back to the Future, where Doc Brown lived in 1955). From there it was about half a mile down the the Rose Bowl--and by down I mean all downhill. That's a great way to start a run. It's like flying. I ran around the bowl, then stopped and got a drink and used the bathroom. Going back up the hill was much less fun. <br />
<br />
I felt proud of this run, not because it was fast or anything (it wasn't, except the first mile which was mostly downhill), but because I really, really didn't want to do it and I did it anyway. I figured that if I can keep the pace that I had today for 13.1 miles, I should be able to finish in less than 3 hours. When I signed up for the race, I had to tell them how much time I thought I would need to complete the course. I think I said three and a half hours. My new goal is 2.5 hours, which might be a little hard (okay, maybe impossible, I just did the math). At least now I'm pretty sure I'll be able to complete the course without the pace car picking me up.<br />

This reminded me of how much less pain I've been experiencing. <br />

I didn't crochet as I ran. I let others be the L.A. crazy (like the bagpiper, the woman in black running in the street, and the woman pushing her dog in a stroller). I'm nice like that. I did run an extra half a mile. And I walked two miles with the girls this afternoon running errands, which should count as at least seven miles with stroller resistance and seven year old resistance. <br />

When I started this experiment in being athletic, I was mostly thinking of running those 13.1 miles (I won't leave off that tenth of a mile) as a means of <a href="http://www.razoo.com/story/Run-For-Freedom-3?referral_code=sw">raising money</a> to help restore the lives of girls and women who have had so much taken from them. I wanted to do this because for years I have heard stories of girls sold into slavery and have been able to do nothing about it. Every once in a while I will see how wonderful and beautiful my daughters are and it will hit me how lucky I am, how lucky they are. I think of the daughters who are sold, because their parents are tricked, desperate, or dead. I run for my daughters, so they will learn to care, and for the daughters who have no one else to run for them. <br />

At least now all the other walkers, runners, bikers, skaters will have a story to tell of a very slow runner trying not to faint all the while crocheting. At least I didn't fall on my face. Christmas made running hard and blogging impossible. But tonight I finished my first run of the year, after a little over a week off. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. <br />

Yesterday was the Rose Parade, which means the city is still coming back together. I run around the Rose Bowl (on a nice track). Tents are still up from float decorating. Barricades are still hanging out on the side of the road. And best of all: horse dung is still on the road/running track. Or at least that's what I like to imagine it is. It could have just been mud/grass clippings tracked out by trucks. I didn't stop to smell it.<br />

I did not want to go running. Three of my neighbors are training for the same race. Every time I see them out running (which is way too often), I feel guilty and defeated. I'm reminded that I am not a runner. I'm not doing this for fun, but to challenge myself in a new and different way and to hopefully raise some money for a <a href="http://www.razoo.com/story/Run-For-Freedom-3?referral_code=sw">cause I deeply believe in</a>. <br />

Over 27 million people are enslaved worldwide, with most of them being women and children and many of those in sex work. The average age of girls sold into slavery is 12 years old. The butterflies do make me run faster! I found an amazon credit we had and ordered the butterfly compression stockings. They came today and I had my best run yet.<br />

I also realized it's much easier to run if nothing is hurting. The tops of my feet had been hurting for a while. About a week ago, the pain was quite bad when running. I came home, googled a bit, and found some stretches to try. It seems to have helped (or maybe taking 3 days off) and I had a mostly pain-free run.<br />

I am realizing that when I watch the time and push myself to run for a set time, I do better. Someone had mentioned a run four minutes/walk one pace. I decided to try it and it seems to be a great system for me for now. I tried this for the first time on my Thanksgiving run (which I didn't have time to blog about). It worked fairly well until I got too hot (I made the mistake of going mid-day on a very warm day). I ended up walking most of the last mile, when my song of "four more minutes in the hot, hot sun...three more minutes in the hot, hot sun...two more minutes in the hot, hot sun..." stopped motivating me.<br />

Every once in a while I like to do something that scares me to death. For example, in college I tried out for a play (and more terrifyingly got a part) and took voice lessons (ie had to sing in front of music majors). Running is definitely one of these things. I am not good at it, but it is good for me. Theologian <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Grenz">Stanley Grenz</a> once talked about how he liked to play guitar because he enjoyed it, but he was not good at it. It's good for me to be reminded that there are many things I am not good at. <br />
<br />
That being said, tonight's run was my best time yet. I realized that I tend to go faster listening to Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me as opposed to This American Life. I also tend to laugh out loud, which adds to the amusement of other Rose Bowl walkers/runners. If you know of any other hilarious or upbeat podcasts (or audiobooks), let me know. <br />

I bought a pair of <a href="http://zaggora.com/flares/">Zaggora Flares</a> impulsively a few months ago with a groupon. I like them, mostly. A week or so ago I noticed a hole on the outer thigh seam. I emailed the company and they said they would send a replacement pair, but while I wait, I wear the holy pants. This causes some anxiety/excitement. I'm a little afraid that I'll be halfway around the track and the hole will start to grow and there I will be exposed and 1.5 miles from my car. </div>

Somehow my app messed up tonight, but it worked in my favor. Every 5 minutes the lady's voice comes on (I call her Robot Monica) and says how far I've gone, my average pace and the time. Sometimes I love her, sometimes I hate her. Anyway, Robot Monica came on tonight at the 5 minute mark and said I had gone half a mile. Well, that's kind of awesome because I haven't done a mile in less than 12 minutes yet. I was inspired by my speed and pushed myself to keep it up. Well, as I neared the end of the track I realized that the app seemed off. Upon closer examination, the app messed up the first 5 minutes, but it did manage to make me go faster. So I guess I'll forgive RoboMon.</div>

It generally works out that Matt comes home from work and I run away. He takes care of the girls and cooks dinner, while I have some quiet. It's really an amazing arraignment (for me anyway). <br />

Friday night is not my favorite run night, but I really wanted to try for a redemptive run (as in something to counter the awfulness of Thursday's run). It didn't work. Something is up with my stomach, which made running unpleasant. I tried to push myself a little harder and I managed to run about 3/4 of a mile without walking. Then I thought all my insides were going to fall out.<br />

It was awful. My legs felt like leaden Jell-O--heavy and wobbly and like they didn't know how to work. My ankles hurt. The tops of my feet hurt. My stomach hurt. It was quite unpleasant all around.<br />

I'm not sure if it was because I was wearing different clothes or because I was hungry or because I had eaten (a lot of) chocolate earlier in the day. Or maybe because I was tired or I had already heard the episode of This American Life or because it was raining a little or because I'm just not good at running.<br />
<br />
For whatever reason, it was miserable. But I don't want to give up because the last two "runs" were good, almost fun. I think the good ones make the miserable ones worth it. Or at least I'm going to tell myself that so I will keep going.<br />

<b>Side note</b>: Good news!!! A friend sent me a link to CEP sports compression stockings. I hadn't been looking at these when researching compression options because I didn't they would be as compressive as the medical grade ones. I did some research and found that they apply less pressure than the medical ones, which would be okay, but not ideal for now. I looked them up on Amazon and Amazon in its infinite wisdom recommended other fun compression stockings. That is where I found these:<br />
